MEDICARE PART A

Prescription drugs aren't covered by Original Medicare. Even though Medicare Part D coverage is optional, it can be valuable if you take medications. In the event that you fail to enroll in Medicare Part D Coverage as soon as you become eligible, you will be charged a late-enrollment penalty. An independent Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) or a Medicare Advantage Plan that includes prescription drug coverage are the two options for Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage.

You should understand the differences between Medicare Supplement Plans and Medicare Advantage Plans before choosing a plan. Many people mistakenly believe Advantage Plans are Supplements when they are not.

Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans

Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans are used in conjunction with original Medicare. A caregiver who accepts Medicare will take a Supplement since they can only bill Medicare. Supplements pay their part (generally 20% of the Medicare-covered benefits) after Medicare pays its part (generally 80%). If you do not get a prescription drug plan when first eligible, there will be a penalty for those who do get one when they become eligible. Supplements do not include prescription drug coverage (Part D, PDP). Medicare Supplements do not change year-over-year (although the costs generally increase, the coverage stays the same).

Medicare Advantage Plans

An all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage Plans are sometimes referred to as "Part C" or "MA Plans." These plans are offered by private companies that are approved by Medicare. Despite joining a Medicare Advantage Plan, you still have Medicare coverage. As part of these "bundled" plans, Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) are covered, along with Medicare Part D (Medicare Drug Plans).

(Part D)

Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D). PDPs (sometimes called "Medicare Advantage Plans") add drug coverage to Original Medicare, some Medicare Cost Plans, and some Medicare Private Fee-for-Service Plans (PFFS).

Formularies are lists of covered drugs for each Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. Drugs are typically categorized into different tiers on Medicare drug plans. The cost of drugs varies by tier.

Low-tier drugs are generally less expensive than high-tier drugs. Your prescriber may be able to request a lower copayment if your drug is on a higher tier and your prescriber thinks you need it instead of a similar drug on a lower tier.
